Music

Our region is a magnet for young music writers and producers - nationally and internationally. It is also home to the world's first Bachelor of Popular Music program, exclusive to the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University Gold Coast Campus.

Our city hosts the largest touring music event in the Southern Hemisphere, the Big Day Out, at which Council has sponsored a local stage since 2004, which highlights acts to the national and international music industry.

BusinessGC also supports:

- Music development initiatives including workshops and opportunities for musical acts
- The Gold Coast Music Industry Association formed in 2004 as the voice and for the local music industry
- Music development initiatives

 Gold Coast Music Industry Association

The Gold Coast Music Industry Association (GCMIA) was established in 2003 to represent local artists. With the support of Qmusic, Queensland's topmost industry body - the GCMIA helps raise the national and international profile of our artists and music scene. In 2003 the GCMIA received a Queensland Government Community Jobs Plan grant to employ long-term unemployed and youth at risk to create Australia's first community-run record label.

Elston Records, named after what Surfers Paradise was originally referred to, obtained a national deal with MGM Distribution. It coordinated the release and promotion for two singles by Gold Coast artists - Kristy London's Miss You, and The Wall of Sound's My Dad. A series of promotional compilations, being coordinated by the GCMIA, is also on the cards. The title of the CD series "Latitude 28", like the name of the label, reflects where we sit on the geographical map. The GCMIA supports homegrown talent. Liaising with music lovers, club owners, musicians, agents, it encourages a joint effort to build a thriving industry to benefit everyone.
