Queensland Government's Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is a flexible initiative, responsive to the ever changing economic climate. The initiative is focused on job creation to maintain people's connection with the workforce and on building skills to meet current and future industry needs. Maximising workforce participation remains the key priority for Skilling Queenslanders for Work .

As part of this initiative Queensland government has collaborated with Gold Coast City Council to conduct an analysis of industry skills and training in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) based industries to identify gaps and employment opportunities. The information received through this initiative will support and assist future prioritising of industry and training programs.

About the initiative
As part of it’s TechGC program, Council is conducting an analysis of industry skills and training in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) based industries to identify gaps and employment opportunities.

TechGC Program
Initiated in 2009, the TechGC program is a long-term strategic program to support the growth and development of STEM-based industries within Gold Coast City.

Linkages
The TechGC program links with other projects and programs within Gold Coast City Council’s Economic Development Branch, including the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, the Gold Coast Innovation Centre and the Higher Education Development Project.

A skills and training officer from Gold Coast City Council’s Economic Development Branch can meet with you to discuss the following: 
- current staffing levels and qualifications
- prospective staff and preferred qualifications
- recruitment strategies

The information provided by the STEM industry will identify:
- current trends in the STEM based industry in relation to qualifications and training 
- opportunities for up skilling of existing staff  
- pathways for employment and training
- skills and training requirements for the future

The purpose of the initiative is to identify:
- STEM skills and training gaps
- STEM employment opportunities
